Betawi Heritage Takes Center Stage at the 4th Betawi Mask Festival

A wide array of traditional Betawi cultural arts were showcased at the 4th Betawi Mask Festival, held at the Great Research Institute of Chemical Industry (BBIK) courtyard in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta on Saturday (8/1).

Residents have shown great enthusiasm

The event, themed 'Nimbrung-nya orang Betawi' (The Betawi Gathering), was organized by the Sanggar Seni Mak Manih Nirin Kumpul Foundation and officially opened by the East Jakarta Cultural Sub-agency Head, Berkah Shadaya.

Berkah expressed that the event is highly commendable as it helps preserve Betawi culture amidst the heavy influx of foreign influences in the digital era, which often threaten to displace local traditions.

By holding such events frequently, he added, ancestral heritage can be effectively maintained.

"Activities like these essentially assist us in safeguarding, developing, and sustaining Betawi cultural arts," he explained.

He hoped that local art studios would keep the momentum going with frequent events like this, ensuring the youth stay connected to their traditional roots, especially Betawi heritage.

Pekayon Sub-district Secretary, Karwadi continued that this festival is more than just a celebration—it is a tribute to the legendary Betawian artist, the late Mak Manih Nirin Kumpul, and a dedicated effort to keep his cultural legacy alive.

"The studio showcased a Mask Dance performed by 12 young professional dancers. Residents have shown great enthusiasm since the event opened this morning," he explained.

Besides the Betawi Mask Dance, the event featured Bodoran (traditional comedy), Gambang Kromong music, Tanjidor, and Orkes Melayu. Other cultural highlights included Pencak Silat martial arts, Palang Pintu ceremony, traditional Betawi dances, and Hadroh performances.

This event also hosted a bazaar with 60 local MSMEs selling various food, beverages, handicrafts, and fashion items.

According to him, the theme Nimbrung-nya Orang Betawi was chosen to revive the spirit of togetherness, community gathering, and local camaraderie, while also preserving cultural heritage.
